When should you change the gas account holder?

There are different situations in which you may need to change the account holder on a natural gas contract.

Buying or selling a property:

When you buy a second-hand property, you need to change the gas supply account holder. This helps you avoid any issues with the previous owner. For example, if the previous owner leaves unpaid bills, you could be affected if the contract remains in their name.

Renting a property:

As a tenant, it is advisable for the natural gas contract to be in your name to avoid misunderstandings with the landlord and to have full control over your consumption and billing. This way, you make sure you only pay for the gas you consume.

Death of the account holder:

If the gas supply account holder dies, the heirs must change the contract holder to the name of the new person responsible. This procedure is part of the usual processes after a death and is necessary to regularise the gas supply situation.

Separation or divorce:

In these cases, it is common for one member of the couple to remain in the property, making it necessary to change the name of the person responsible for the supply. This way, each party assumes responsibility for their own contracts and bills.

These same reasons also apply to other household supplies, such as changing the electricity account holder, which is also a common procedure when moving home or when the property owner changes.

Who should request the gas contract name change?

The change of account holder must be carried out by the person who will appear as the new contract holder.

In other words, if you move into a rental property or buy your own home, you must contact the gas company to request the change of supply contract holder.

We also explain what to do with electricity and gas when moving home.

Common questions about changing the gas account holder

The timeframe for the gas contract name change to become effective is usually between 2 and 3 business days from the moment the company receives all the documentation.

It is important to take this timeframe into account to avoid possible issues with the supply.

It is usually a free procedure. However, it is advisable to check with the company in case there is any cost associated with specific situations.

You should bear in mind that if the supply at the property has been temporarily deactivated, additional charges may apply.

If it has been deactivated for more than 5 years, you will need to pay the connection fee and the activation fee. If less than 5 years have passed, you will only need to pay the activation fee.

Yes. Changing the gas account holder is an excellent opportunity to review your energy needs and contract a tariff that better suits your consumption.

Before doing so, check whether any minimum contract period has ended.

You can take the opportunity to learn more about the different gas tariffs offered by your company or compare offers from other energy suppliers. Make sure you check whether you have a lock-in period to avoid penalties if you want to change company.
