How to set up natural gas supply in a new home

To activate gas supply in a new home, you need to follow a series of steps. In just one day, you can complete the formal request and then wait for the company to process the activation.

1. Contact a gas supplier

Check which companies supply gas in your Autonomous Community and find out whether their coverage includes your city. Once you have confirmed this, you can request the activation through the supplier.

2. Choose a gas supply plan that suits you

It is important to review the options available to you. Ask the different companies for information. They can guide you so you know which gas tariff to choose.

This way, you make sure that a specialist in this field is helping you choose the option that best suits your needs.

3. Provide the documents requested

These are the documents you will need to submit:

• DNI: alternatively, you can provide your passport or residence card.
• Full address of the property: this should appear on a bill issued in your name.
• Bank account IBAN: you may be asked to provide a certificate of account ownership.
• Rental contract or property deed: this proves that you have the right to be the holder of the gas supply contract. If you are renting, you can put the gas supply in your name while your rental contract is valid.
• Email address: essential for receiving electronic bills.
• Telephone number: so the company can contact you more quickly.
• Thermal Installation Certificate for gas heating, if you use gas to heat your home as well as for domestic hot water.

There are also two acronyms that you may not be familiar with but that are essential:

• CUPS: the Universal Supply Point Code. It identifies your installation and appears on your latest bill.
• CIG: the Gas Installation Certificate, issued by a specialist technician.

4. Wait for the technician to visit your home

The supplier will send all the information to the distribution company. According to sector estimates, the distributor usually takes between 5 and 7 days to process the activation and send a technician to install the gas meter, so the process should not take too long.

Once the installation has been approved, you will need to sign the supply contract.

How to reactivate natural gas supply after cancellation?

If you cancelled your gas supply and want to reactivate it, the first step is to check whether your Gas Installation Certificate is still valid, as this expires 5 years after the supply is cancelled. Regardless of this, the procedure depends on how long the supply has been inactive:

• Less than one year: you will only need to provide the previous Gas Installation Certificate.
• More than one year: you will need to request a new certificate or bulletin so the installation can be checked and confirmed to comply with all requirements and regulations.

You will probably need to provide the same information and documents mentioned in the previous section. If the gas supply is already active but the property owner or tenant has changed, you will only need to request a change of contract holder.

What requirements must be met to set up gas supply in a home in 2026?

To activate gas supply, the supplier must have all the necessary details and documents for the contract holder. If the gas supply point you want to activate is in a shared building, such as a residential community, you must also provide the certificate for the Common Receiving Installation (IRC).

The installation in the property must be in good condition and comply with current safety regulations.

How much does it cost to set up natural gas supply?

The cost of setting up natural gas supply in your home depends on the Autonomous Community where the property is located.

As with electricity, each territory has a distribution company, and there are then several suppliers to choose from. You should know that there are two types of charges that must be paid:

• Connection rights: apply only to new gas installations or reactivations after more than 5 years of inactivity. In 2026, these charges are established, among other regulations, by Royal Decree 1434/2002.
  • The amount is always €106.34 for annual consumption below 15,000 kWh/year, and this will be charged by the company on your behalf.
  • For larger homes with higher domestic consumption (from 15,000 kWh/year to 50,000 kWh/year), the price is €244.40.
  • For companies and residential communities with a contracted capacity above 50,000 kWh/year, the price is €488.83.
• Activation rights: this payment depends on your Autonomous Community and is divided into three tariff groups, although the most common approach is to start with the first one when estimating your expected consumption. This charge applies every time a new activation takes place and usually ranges between €60 and €150, including VAT.

Once the company has real consumption data after one month of use, it will specify which group your supply belongs to. These are the gas activation prices for 2026 (including VAT):

What if the gas supply had previously been cancelled?

In this situation, if the supply was cancelled less than 5 years ago, you do not need to pay the connection rights again — you only need to pay the activation rights. If more time has passed, you will have to pay the same charges as for a new installation.
